Too Busy to Sketch

Sometimes life gets so busy that we forget to do the things that matter the most to us, the things that we love. Often times we don't realize it at first. It takes time. Until suddenly one day we realize that we haven't been feeling ourselves in a long time. We look back on the recent weeks and that's when we realize, that's when we see. Something important has been missing for far too long.

For me, one of those oh so important things is my art. Now I'm an  artist, so how can I forget to do my art? Well, simply put, there are a lot of other aspects of my life and my art is not yet my main source of income. Day jobs, tax season, paperwork, holidays, family events, etc. sometimes pile up and I don't have time to do everything. When I get busy, I lose focus, and when I lose focus, I forget what my priorities are.

I finally realized recently I've gone too long without making any art. Not just paintings, but even my sketches have been neglected. And it's been making me miserable.

Someone asked me once if art was like breathing to me. After thinking for a moment I told them no, it was more like eating. I can survive without it for a while, but the longer I am without it the less pleasant and productive I will become. Without it long enough, I won't be able to function, but it will take some time to get to that point.

I am happy to say, I have finally made time again for my art. Even just a few minutes of sketching makes such a difference. My head feels clearer, my mood is lighter, and I'm more motivated and focused.

A little art is good food for the soul.
